Great Hiking Trails near Homer, Alaska

The areas around Homer, Alaska contain some of Alaska's most popular hiking trails. Many excellent trails are easily accessible from Alaska Luxury Adventures.

Trails in nearby Kachemak Bay State Park require an enjoyable short trip by water taxi across Kachemak Bay, but the trip itself is fun, and the park's trails are definitely worth visiting. Homer Spit Trail

Location: Homer, AK
Length: 8.6 miles
Difficulty: Easy

Homer Spit Trail is an easy out-and-back asphalt trail with an elevation gain of about 400 feet. It's appropriate for all skill levels, and, for the most part, is wheelchair accessible. (It's described by some as a long walk along the beach, rather than a hiking trail.)

The trail runs along Homer Spit, a narrow landform that forms the Kenai Peninsula's southern tip. This is a great place to check out Alaskan shorebirds and waterfowl. You'll also have fantastic views of snow-covered mountains in the distance.

Diamond Creek Trail

Location: Just north of Homer, AK
Length: 4.2 miles
Difficulty: Moderate

Located between Anchor Point and Homer, Diamond Creek Trails is a moderately difficult out-and-back trail with an elevation gain of 695 feet. This is one of the most popular trails on the Homer side of Kachemak Bay.

Initially, the trail winds through scenic forests and grassy meadows. It then descends to the beach, and, finally, ascends along areas of blue clay. At low tide along the beach, you'll be able to explore a variety of small Alaskan sea life in the resulting tide pools. 

Grewingk Glacier
Lake Trail

Location: Kachemak Bay State Park
Length: 3 miles
Difficulty: Easy

Grewingk Glacier Lake Trail is definitely one of Kachemak Bay State Park's most popular, and well-known, trails. It's a little over six miles out-and-back, with a minimal elevation gain. This well-maintained trail travels through cottonwoods and spruce, old-growth forests, and spacious gravel-covered beaches along Grewingk Glacier Lake.

Grewingk Glacier Lake Trail offers great views of the surrounding areas, including mountain glaciers. You'll most likely get to watch hawks and bald eagles hunting for prey, and you may occasionally get a look at a black bear or two.

China Poot Lake Trail

Location: Kachemak Bay State Park
Length: 5.4 miles
Difficulty: Moderate

China Poot Lake Trail is one of the most popular trails in Kachemak Bay State Park. It's a moderately difficult loop trail with an elevation gain of around 950 feet. The trail runs through a dense forest, along a ridge, and, in the late summer, by fields of blueberries. It also passes by a couple of small scenic lakes before reaching China Poot Lake (after a little over two miles).

When you get to China Poot Lake, you can enjoy the excellent fishing the lake is known for. Note that China Poot Lake Trail connects with a number of other trails in the area, including Poot Peak and Wosnesenski River.

Grace Ridge Summit

Location: Kachemak Bay State Park
Length: 8.7 miles
Difficulty: Hard

Grace Ridge Summit is a very difficult out-and-back hike with an elevation gain of well over 3,000 feet. It runs from the beach up to the summit of Grace Ridge and back. Along the way, you'll travel through an old-growth Sitka Spruce forest, beautiful meadows, and a fast-moving creek.

Once you get to Grace Ridge, you'll get great views of the surrounding areas, including Sadie Peak, Eldred Passage, and Cook Inlet. Reviews of this trail regularly mention black-bear sightings, so prepare accordingly.
